The Culture Declares Emergency (CDE) movement was launched on 3 April 2019 by a small group of artists and cultural professionals working in a voluntary capacity. Its aim is to encourage artists and cultural organisations to declare climate and ecological emergency and to collectively interrogate the role of arts and culture in this time of global crisis. It now has over 600 declarers.
CDE takes inspiration from Extinction Rebellion, the Youth Climate Strikes and similar movements but is Independent from them. It seeks to have a professional conversation within and without the sector and to collaborate with others who have declared climate and ecological emergency, including local authorities and sister movements such as Music Declares Emergency and Architects Declare Emergency.
CDE has an informal structure led by members of the CDE ‘anchor circle’ – a group of approximately 10 core activists, many of them freelance cultural professionals. The work needed to support this growing movement is no longer sustainable under the current model and CDE is looking for a part-time Coordinator to take on a number of key tasks, thanks to a grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation UK.
As CDE develops, the Coordinator role will develop with it, and there is the potential for the areas of responsibility to change and grow and for the post holder to contribute to this evolution.
The role is being offered initially for 1-2 day per week, to be negotiated, at a rate of £160 per day. This will be reviewed after three months, and our current funding can support the role for up to a year depending on the number of days per week agreed.
The role will be contracted and managed by Complicité and supported by a small steering group. The Coordinator can work from home, from desk space at the Complicité office in Kentish Town or another location as agreed.
Please send a letter only (no CVs) outlining how you meet the job description and person specification by midday on Monday 2nd December. Letters should be no more than two sides of A4 and sent by email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
