We are experiencing multiple emergencies.

Pandemic, the loss of lives and livelihoods, systemic racism, soaring inequalities, the closure of community spaces, the erosion of trust with those who hold power, increasing global temperatures and the alarming rate of species extinction.
Our economic and political systems are still prioritising profit over people and planet. Yet these systems have never been as exposed or vulnerable as they are now.

We have the power to change.

We have an opportunity to transform these crises into something else, something better, something that works for everyone. In June the International Energy Agency said we had six months to avert a climate crisis post-lockdown. The clock is ticking to make sure we don’t cross the 1.5 degree threshold into dangerous climate breakdown.

We Must Act Now.

The climate and ecological emergency is experienced differently by everyone and CDE is a space for all those in crisis and emergency to express themselves and have their vision for a better tomorrow seen and heard.

Let’s harness our collective storytelling power as a sector.

This is our time to unite and go further than any of us have so far. We have a year to gather, galvanise and express our collective voice in time for COP26 in November 2021. Let’s join up and make some noise.

August is the month building up to Rebellion. September is our month of Declaration. And the autumn will be the time when all declarers can engage in movement and sector-wide Assemblies with your communities.

It all starts now.

Below details the invitation to join the Culture Rebellion:

FRIDAY 28TH AUGUST
DROP YOUR BANNER: (RE)MAKE YOUR DECLARATION!
Artists and Organisations are going out en masse to Declare Emergency.

CDE has grown since April 2019 to become a community of over 1000 declarers. We’re ready to send a clear and united message that cannot be ignored. We are declaring as a whole sector.

On Friday 28th August every declaring organisation (new and old!) is invited to drop a physical banner outside or on your building, visibly next to your institution’s name. Additionally, every declaring individual artist and organisation is invited to share a digital ‘banner’ via your social media platforms.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED:

  • Here are all the banner files you need (to be added to over the next week). There are banners, flags, posters, social media cards and you could even project!
  • If printing: print on eco-friendly material! Canvas or recycled materials – not plastic.
  • If printing: you can claim up to £500 for expenses. See details here. (Limited – order ASAP)
  • Keep your banner visible for at least 2 weeks, and then for as long as you wish.
  • Keep your banner for future use!

TUESDAY 1ST SEPTEMBER
LETTERS TO THE EARTH: SPEAK TO POWER

Letters to the Earth and CDE invite your creative responses to the emergency on the day that parliament resits after summer recess and Rebellion begins. This is for everyone – share with your communities!

We need to raise our voices and hold to account those whose power, influence and decisions are determining the course of our lives. The health of our communities and our planet depends on it.

What needs to be said? Who needs to be heard? How can we bring about change?

Write your Letter to Power. This is an opportunity to give voice to your emergency –however that emergency manifests for you or your community. At this political and social crossroad, what change is now possible and who holds the power to make that change?

This is an open invitation and is open to interpretation – a “letter” can be written, spoken word, a song, apiece of public art or performance.

Send your letters to those who have the power to influence. Post them, record them, stream them, publish them in newspapers or online and present them in public wherever you are from 1st September 2020.

Share an image of your “letter” on social media using:
#LetterstotheEarth #LetterstoPower

You can use these social media graphics.

SEPTEMBER REBELLION

“The Government is failing to do what’s needed to keep us safe. They ignored the warnings about coronavirus and now they’re ignoring warnings of a 4˚C world from their official Committee on Climate Change, a warning that could result in billions of deaths – with racially marginalised communities, and those in the Global South on the front line.

Enough’s enough. We have an opportunity NOW as we emerge from the pandemic to make necessary change, but business-as-usual is fighting to regain its hold. We can’t let that happen!”

Beginning on 1st September, Extinction Rebellion will return.
Rebels will gather in CardiffManchester and London to disrupt key powers and Parliament until they respond to the Climate and Ecological Emergency by debating XR’s 3 demands in the Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill and set up a Citizens’ Assembly.
