Make Britain Green Again - copyright Kate Pellegrini

I am an Australian painter based in London and have been making art for over 30 years. I believe we are here to look after each other, including those who are different to us. I make art to connect with people I will never meet. I live in an age when we face an existential crisis because of man-made climate change, and art and writing are the way I deal with the difficult emotions aroused by this mounting crisis.

Declaration

I will do what I can to address the environmental and climate crisis. This subject will affect my work and interpersonal relationships because we have a unique opportunity to affect change, as a gesture of solidarity with those suffering from its effects. When Winston Churchill made his ‘We will fight them on the beaches …’ speech he did not know the Allies would win the war, but he could not contemplate surrendering to tyranny.

There are dozens of regenerative projects to invest in, but if our representatives support subsidies for the extraction of fossil fuels we are contributing to Ecocide. Sitting on the fence is an act of gross self-indulgence, complacency and indifference. The history of our times will be written by current school children and we do not inherit the world from our parents, we are loaned it by our children. What are we waiting for?
