CDE North East England

A community of artists and organisations from a huge array of artform practices across the North East.

We cover the local authority areas of County Durham, Darlington, Northumberland, Teesside, Tyne & Wear. The north east is a region of great contrast with national parks, forests, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Dark Skies, miles of coastline and post-industrial conurbations including areas of high multiple deprivations. We are a long way from London and share a border with Scotland!

We launched our hub in July 2021 with a hybrid meet-up by people representing all parts of the region and a huge array of artform practices. Our meeting was hosted by Jack Drum Arts, Co Durham’s longest-established professional community arts organisation. The event kicked off with a performance by local young people exploring their concerns about the climate crisis.

Existing declarers Festival of Thrift, poet Linda France and artist Henna Asikainen talked about their work and friends from Kirklees Declares shared examples of their inspiring programme. We also had a live link with young activists from Brasil sharing their Good Living Project.

Since the launch we have an expanded community of artists and organisations signed up to receive our emails all of whom wish to put the climate and ecological emergency at the heart of their work. The region is rich in festivals and outdoor events and going forwards we intend for our hub to be a presence at these events with stalls, workshops, speakers, etc.
