A new working group delving into the environmental, social and ethical impact of the technologies we use as a group

The Digital Ethics Group was set up online in early 2022 to consider the types of digital technologies that we use as a group, and the environmental, social and ethical impact of using those technologies. To date, we have met online several times and have discussed open source technologies, technological colonialism, green web hosting, alternative email providers, physical devices and the role of technology in spreading messages.

We are creating recommendations of digital technologies that have a strong environmental or social ethos based on our group’s knowledge and experience.  The recommendations will be released periodically, called #SmallBytes. and we encourage CDE members to try out the technologies and give feedback on their usability as well as their ethical and environmental benefits. Like many areas of practice, we know that this landscape of issues is complex, and we are trying to find ways to use digital technologies responsibly while also making sure the messages of Culture Declares Emergency reach as wide an audience as possible. We welcome any new interested parties to join us.
